Blue Chelsea Treasures is a one-of-a-kind jewelry design company comprised of the mother/daughter team of Leta Altom and Courtenay Altom Kehl. Mrs. Altom, who recently moved back to her Texas roots after 40+ years in the San Francisco Bay Area, is an designer by education and trade. Mrs. Kehl, a native Californian, who as they say in Texas, “got here as fast as she could”, has an MBA and 25 years of tinkering around with making accessories.
One day in late summer 2011, while helping a friend and owner of EIEIO Organic Farm in Wimberley, we found a discarded box of rusted metal roofing disks (used to hold down the tar paper during the nailing process) and asked if we could have them. The disks had such individual patterns and an unusual patina from 5 years of weathering we knew we could do “something” with them. Thus was born a new line of jewelry.
Blue Chelsea is steadily building a following through its distinctive designs. Each hand crafted item includes vintage elements and unique metal, bone or lace pieces. Unable to be defined by one genre, a Blue Chelsea Treasure is “upcycled” at its most elegant, recycled at its core, SteamPunk in attitude with Victorian sentimentality.
In addition to the line of Neckalces, Earrings, Bracelets, Headwraps and Pins we create custom pieces using family heirlooms. Instead of having Grandmother’s costume rhinestone jewelry sitting in a box, it can be individually transformed into wearable art. By re-creating jewelry we are not only keeping more trash from the landfill, but we are reconnecting people with bygone eras, keeping memories of loved ones alive and breathing new life into discarded remnants of the past.
With each Treasure being one-of-a-kind, our inventory is always fresh. Items are available on our website, www.bluechelsea.com, at booth #161 at Wimberley Market Days on the first Saturday of the month and various other shows and markets, the dates of which are listed on our Upcoming Events section.
